Introduction

The Mulch Calculator is a handy tool that helps you determine the amount of mulch you need for your landscaping project. It takes into account the area you want to cover and the volume of the mulch bag you're using. The calculator provides four key pieces of information: the area covered in square feet, the volume of mulch in cubic feet, the volume of mulch in cubic yards, and the number of mulch bags needed. We are a licensed contractor and the calculator implements the method we would use in the field to figure out the amounts. Given that there is significant difference between bulk and retail prices we show prices and information for both cases and we also link to store pages with prices where we would normal buy the materials from.

Calculating the Area Covered

The area covered is the total surface area you want to mulch. This is measured in square feet. You provide this information when you input your data into the calculator. The calculator simply takes this number and rounds it to the nearest whole number. For example, if you input an area of 150.5 square feet, the calculator will round this to 151 square feet.

Calculating the Volume of Mulch

The volume of mulch is the total amount of mulch you need to cover the specified area. This is measured in cubic feet. You provide this information when you input your data into the calculator. The calculator simply takes this number and rounds it to the nearest whole number. For example, if you input a volume of 50.5 cubic feet, the calculator will round this to 51 cubic feet.

Calculating the Volume of Mulch in Cubic Yards

The volume of mulch in cubic yards is calculated by dividing the volume in cubic feet by 27. This is because there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. The calculator rounds this number to the nearest hundredth. For example, if you input a volume of 54 cubic feet, the calculator will calculate the volume in cubic yards as follows:

54 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 2 cubic yards

Calculating the Number of Mulch Bags Needed

The number of mulch bags needed is calculated by dividing the volume of mulch in cubic feet by the volume of the mulch bag in cubic feet. The calculator rounds this number up to the nearest whole number, as you can't purchase a fraction of a bag. For example, if you input a volume of 54 cubic feet and a bag volume of 2 cubic feet, the calculator will calculate the number of bags as follows:

54 cubic feet ÷ 2 cubic feet/bag = 27 bags

In this case, you would need to purchase 27 bags of mulch. The calculator will display this as '27 (2 cu.ft)' to indicate that this calculation is based on a bag volume of 2 cubic feet.

What types of mulch are available and what are their differences?

• Wood mulch: Made from shredded or chipped wood, it is one of the most common types of mulch. It helps retain moisture, suppresses weeds, and adds organic matter to the soil.
• Rubber mulch: Made from recycled rubber, it is long-lasting and does not decompose. It provides good insulation, weed control, and is often used in playgrounds or areas where safety is a concern.
• Straw mulch: Made from dried straw, it is lightweight and easy to spread. It helps retain moisture, suppresses weeds, and adds organic matter to the soil. It is commonly used in vegetable gardens.
