Residential wooden fence
Residential wooden fences provide privacy, security, and decorative appeal. They’re available in a range of heights depending on location: front yard, side yard, backyard, or a line shared with neighbors.These wooden fences are great for marking your property line, enclosing your yard and adding curb appeal.
Wooden fences for privacy
For privacy, choose a wood fence with a taller height of 7 feet by building to that height or adding topper like a lattice. Choosing fence panels where there are no gaps between pickets also ensures greater privacy. Local regulations govern fence height and special permitting may be needed for fences that exceed that height.

Redwood fence
Redwood is durable, resists rot, insects, and less subject to swelling and shrinking than other wood. It’s longer-lasting and less likely to crack or split. The reddish tones add a beautiful appearance. There are different ‘grades’ of Redwood. Some common Redwood grades are: Redwood Con Common, Redwood Con Heart, and Redwood Clear Heart.
Cedar fence
Cedar fences are a really popular option across the U.S. Common lumber options are Western Red, Japanese Cedar. Cedar wood is durable in damp climates and able to withstand weather conditions well. Cedar is lightweight but stable, making it a great choice for residential wood fences.

Wood fences can be built to suit a variety of uses, from adding privacy and security.
Nail up wooden fence
The classic “nail up” wood fence is simple and sturdy. This fence normally consists of non-overlapping, side-by-side boards. Typically, this style will use “dog-fence” boards or regular flat top boards. It’s a great way to add privacy to your yard, and this style is often the most economical.
Wooden box wire fence
Box wire fences have a box frame with wire mesh in a variety of gauges inset. The size and material of the openings differ. The smaller the opening the more animals you will keep out- ranging from 2” to ½”. This fence is great for keeping animals out (or in) without sacrificing views.
Wood and metal fence
Some fences can be built by combining wood and metal. The most common are metal posts with a wood frame and panels. Metal posts are not necessarily stronger than wood posts, but some local ordinances/HOAs require metal. Another variant is the metal post and frame with pickets inserted which usually requires specialty tongue & grooves with the pickets.
Louvered fence
Louvered wood fences have louvered boards which resemble shutter slats. The standard construction is a picture frame with louvered pickets nailed to the top and bottom rails. This provides a combination of privacy and increased airflow through the fence.
Wood dog-ear fence
Dog-ear fence refers to the profile of the picket used to build the fence. The classic nail up dog-ear wood fence is simple and sturdy. The fence style is great for their versatility and can be installed in a variety of heights. Dog-ear fences are a good choice for many fence projects large or small because the style is usually economical.
Shadowbox wood fence
This style comes from board on board fences with pickets alternating between both sides of the fence rail. They can add more dimensional or decorative fence elements to your nail up fence. The design of these wood fences also makes them great if you desire more privacy.
Side by side wood fence
Side by side wood fences have pickets installed edge to edge. Typically, with fences, on one side, there are boards, on the other, the frame and posts are visible. Side by side wood fences allow you to alternate the panel, which is a good option for fences along shared property lines.
Split rail wood fence
Split rail wood fences consist of three to four rows of horizontal fence posts. The posts are supported by vertical beams every few feet. The horizontal posts are spaced approximately one foot apart. Split rail fences are a great option when you don’t want to obstruct your view.

There is a wide variety of wood fence types and styles to choose from. Wood fences are customizable: adjust the height, picket pattern and orientation, add toppers or decorative trims, paint or stain. Wood is a natural material that’s long lasting: redwood is insect resistant, cedar is long-lasting and can withstand hard weather. Easy to install, no special equipment or tools are necessary to build a wood fence and typically experienced installers can install 60 LF of wood fencing a day.

The national average cost for a wood fence will vary due to factors like material costs, the type of wood, the fence style and any add-ons, terrain characteristics, and more. A rough estimate for a 6’ height wood fence in 2023 cost between $15-$35 per linear foot. The average project size for residential homes ranges from 80 to 100 linear feet of wood fence.
Wood Fence Parts
Though there are different wood fence styles, every wood fence will be made up of the same basic parts.
Wood fence panels
Fence panels are the section of fence between the fence post. You can build panels in a variety of widths, but most common are 8 feet wide. If wind resistance is a priority, build 6 feet wide panels to increase stability.
Wood fence rails
Fence rails are assembled to create the frame upon which fence pickets are installed. They are typically 2” x 4” lumber that runs horizontally along the top and bottom of the fence. 3 rails are usually included. For short fences or fences that use stronger lumber like redwood, 2 rails is sufficient.
Wood fence pickets
Pickets are wood panels that are nailed vertically or horizontally to the fence rails. Wood fence pickets come in 4” or 6” widths. There are decorative tops to choose from, like dog ear, gothic, pointed, or flat tops.
Wood fence posts
Posts are the main vertical support structure for fences. Posts are usually installed every 8 feet. Standard post thickness is 4” x 4”, pressure treated pine. Wood fence posts are set in the ground 2’ - 4’ deep with cement. Some can be installed on concrete/paved surfaces using steel brackets.
Wood fence kickboard
A kickboard is a piece of pressure-treated wood placed on the bottom of the fence. It’s meant to be in direct contact with the ground. It’s more resistant against rot and pests, which helps the rest of your fence last longer. Kickboards are a nice design element for any wood fence!
Wood fence topper
A lattice is a common wood fence topper. Lattices range from one to two feet tall and come in a variety of style options. Popular choices include diagonal lattices, privacy lattices, square lattices and piano key lattices.
Wooden gates
Wooden gates provide access and can be built as standalone structures. There are several frame options, like z-frames, box frames, or metal frames. You need to factor in the width and height for your gate and how you’d like it to move and lock. Certain gate styles, like sliding gates, require additional hardware.
